The Football Draft of Divvying Up Household Goods

Having trouble dividing up your household goods? Try the good ole' football draft. Here is how it works:

1. Walk through the house and make a list of everything.

2. Each spouse independently puts his/her list in order making the item a party wants the most as number one and the item the party wants the least at the bottom of the list

3. Flip a coin to decide who goes first

4. The first party gets to choose the first item he or she wants and it goes back and forth from then on.

For items that are extremely expensive (antiques, paintings, etc.) the person who wants the expensive item gives up several early round picks in order to have what they want. This allows the value of the household goods divided up to be equal. If you are having trouble splitting up your household goods consider the hourly rates your attorneys are being paid to divide up your household goods. Add that hourly rate together. Is it worth $400-$500 per hour to have other people negotiate what items each of you will get? If all else fails flip a coin again.
