Don't be a Jolie/Pitt kind of Family

There’s been a lot in the news about Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s custody dispute. Most recently the judge ordered Angelina to tell the children that the court has determined that not having a relationship with their father is harmful to them, that they are safe with him, and that having a healthy relationship with both parents is critical. Why would the judge order Mom to tell the kids this?

The judge in their case also issued a warning shot by saying “If the minor children remain closed down to their father and depending on the circumstances surrounding this condition, it may result in a reduction of the time they spend with their Mother and may result in the court ordering primary physical custody to their Father.”

So, what does this mean for you? No, you can’t have a live-in psychologist for the kids at all times and you aren’t jet setting in between countries this summer but it’s clear that even this judge presiding over a celebrity custody dispute values the attributes that both Mothers and Fathers bring to the table as parents. He is also saying that he will not tolerate one parent trying to cut the other parent out.

What is the lesson? Under Missouri law the court is required to consider which parent is more likely to encourage a relationship between the kids and the other parent. Make sure that person is you.
